CKU wants to support and motivate Christians to work for justice, the strengthening of human dignity and living conditions and the protection of creation.

  • Transformation: Restoration of identity and dignity
  • Reconciliation: Creating healthy relationships and healing what is broken
  • Empowerment: Equipping people to withstand the abuse of power and injustice

These are three key concepts for CKU and they express the diaconal starting point of CKU. Realizing that development is not only carried out by means of economic improvements, these concepts are also pointers for a more holistic view of development which CKU seeks to promote.

Diakonia as a starting point

Diakonia – serving others – is an integral part of the church’s identity. Diaconal initiatives for the benefit of marginalised and vulnerable people is a natural consequence of the Christian faith. Read our understanding of diakonia here.

In many churches and Christian organisations there is a potential for developing diaconal skills. CKU supports the development of this potential, equipping the church in the global South to interpret the challenges it faces and address them through expanding its service.

CKU helps member organisations to strengthen diaconal efforts of their partners in the South toward active political and social action in the community, for the benefit of poor and marginalised people.

Strategies for development work

CKU’s strategies for development work in third world countries have been worked out with inspiration from other development agencies as well as with input from representatives from within the member organizations. The strategies are built upon the values of CKU emphasizing the Christian values and a holistic development approach.
