{"id":9195,"date":"2026-02-24T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cku.dk\/?p=9195"},"modified":"2026-02-26T10:59:47","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T09:59:47","slug":"from-frontline-to-family-life-ukraines-war-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cku.dk\/en\/2026\/02\/from-frontline-to-family-life-ukraines-war-veterans\/","title":{"rendered":"From Frontline to Family Life: Ukraine&#8217;s war veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Foto:<\/strong> Camp Maximum<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Viktor and Lyudmila<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the names of two Ukrainians, who have felt the war on their own skin.<br>Two names, two people, who\u2019s story is easily lost in the crowd when we talk about the Ukranian population. <br>Yet this couple, from the town of Kaniv, is among the many families whose lives have been turned upside down since the Russian invasion.<br>Viktor is a veteran of a war that is still raging, in the country he calls home.<br>For him and Lyudmila, life will never return to what it once was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the couple remains in good spirits. They explain that they have twice taken part in a rehabilitation program for veterans and their families. An experience that has improved their physical and mental well\u2011being.<br>The rehabilitation program is called <em>Camp Maximum<\/em> and is one of the Ukrainian projects that CKU supports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4 Years of War<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of us remember the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the shockwave it washed over Europe with.<br>It happened on February 24<sup>th<\/sup>, 2022. 4 years have now passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 6 million Ukrainians have fled the country.<br>Earlier this month, President Zelensky announced that the number of Ukrainian soldiers killed has now reached 55.000. Furthermore, above 900.000 Ukrainians remain in military service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The battles have claimed lives on a scale not seen since the wars in Yugoslavia in the 90\u2019s.<br>As a result, the number of Ukrainian war veterans continues to rise, and so does the need for rehabilitation.<br>Those who return home are faced with the challenges of reconnecting with life as a parent, a partner, and everyday obligations. All while grappling with physical and psychological battle scars.<br>They return to everyday life with a baggage of trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These people need substantial psychological and physical support to regain a sense of normalcy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rehabilitation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Through <em>Nexus in Ukraine+<\/em> CKU support the rehabilitation of Ukrainian veteran families at <em>Camp Maximum<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Camp Maximum<\/em> welcomes families like Viktor and Lyudmila, many of whom bring their children. Here, they receive help to cope with the trauma that accompanies life as a veteran or relatives of someone who has served in the Ukrainian military.<br>Upon arrival, the families are met by psychologists and rehabilitation specialists. They spend a week at the camp focused on restoring joy and creating positive new memories together.<br>In other words, the camp gives families a break from the war and a chance to reconnect with one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camp Maximum\u2019s founder and director, Vitaliy Sobko, explains:<br>\u201cWe create memories that they haven\u2019t had for a long time.\u201d<br>He adds that many veterans struggle to rebuild close relationships with their families when they return home. That is why there is a need for a fresh start, with both therapy and new, positive experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"799\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/cku.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/born-af-veteraner-camp-maximum.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cku.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/born-af-veteraner-camp-maximum.jpg 799w, https:\/\/cku.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/born-af-veteraner-camp-maximum-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cku.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/born-af-veteraner-camp-maximum-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Veteran families take part in many different collaborative activities at Camp Maximum, and both children and adults form strong bonds.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Future for War Veterans<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For the staff at Camp Maximum, the aim is first and foremost to support the families, who participate, and then to look to the future.<br>The growing number of war veterans in Ukraine demands an expanded commitment to rehabilitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With support from CKU, the camp is able to help many families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sobko also emphasizes that participants can continue to help others once they return home:<br>\u201cMost importantly, we equip them with a desire to serve other veterans,\u201d<br>he says, adding:<br>\u201cThis program assumes helping the veterans to be ready to serve other veterans, when they come back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For that reason, the staff do not only rehabilitate families, they also teach them how to support others facing similar challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is for the healing process to continue beyond the participants, and spread like ripples in water, strengthening hope for a brighter future in Ukraine.<br><em>Camp Maximum<\/em> is only the first step.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The battles have claimed lives on a scale not seen since the wars in Yugoslavia in the 90\u2019s.
