A\u00a0day\u00a0celebrated by people\u00a0across\u00a0the world since 1921 as a reminder of the\u00a0fight\u00a0for\u00a0gender equality.\u00a0To mark the occasion, we turn our attention to KVINFO&#8217;s work with Islamic feminism in Morocco, supported by CKU. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Fight Against Oppression of Women<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Morocco, KVINFO,\u00a0backed by CKU,\u00a0has invested significant effort in advancing gender equality\u00a0in Islam.\u00a0Since 2023, the organisation has supported the development of Islamic feminism in the country.\u00a0One of the approaches\u00a0is to develop tools that empower women\u2019s rights organisations, religious leaders, judges, and policymakers to elevate Islamic feminism in the public discourse.\u00a0These feminist perspectives are crucial in efforts to shift societal attitudes toward gender-based violence, women\u2019s inheritance rights, polygamy, and\u00a0underaged\u00a0marriage.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Morocco has made progress in recent years, the challenges\u00a0remain\u00a0substantial. According to KVINFO, gender-based violence and women\u2019s parliamentary representation are still major concerns.\u00a0<br>A 2023 report from the Moroccan network against gender-based violence (LDDF-INJAD) showed that 57% of Moroccan women had experienced physical and\/or sexual violence within the past year.\u00a0In 2025, over 24% of members of the Moroccan parliament were women. An increase of 2,5 percentage points since 2021. These\u00a0numbers\u00a0indicate\u00a0progress\u00a0yet\u00a0also underline the urgency of continued action.\u00a0Therefore,\u00a0KVINFO\u2019s work in Morocco\u00a0is still highly relevant.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>New Interpretations of Islam&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Islamic feminism is one of KVINFO\u2019s central tools in promoting gender equality in Morocco.&nbsp;The movement&nbsp;seeks&nbsp;to combine freedom of&nbsp;religion and belief&nbsp;with gender equality, paving the way for changes in social norms that&nbsp;ultimately improve&nbsp;conditions for women. For this reason, KVINFO&nbsp;works in close collaboration&nbsp;with Moroccan advocates of Islamic feminism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, Islamic feminism allows women to contribute to the narratives and traditions that shape Muslim religiosity. In other words, it creates space for new interpretations of Islamic texts, helping transform&nbsp;the&nbsp;perception&nbsp;of women\u2019s roles in Muslim communities.&nbsp;A&nbsp;key method is&nbsp;\u2018ijtihad\u2019,&nbsp;a&nbsp;process of reinterpretation,&nbsp;that allows scholars and believers to reassess the meaning of religious texts in&nbsp;new ways. This opens the door to understandings of Islam where gender equality occupies a more&nbsp;central place.&nbsp;<br>Islamic feminism thus&nbsp;demonstrates&nbsp;how religious practice can&nbsp;evolve&nbsp;on a feminist foundation without contradicting theological doctrine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Religion and Equality,&nbsp;Hand in Hand<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Religious feminism\u00a0has gained\u00a0momentum,\u00a0not only within Islam, but across the major religions.\u00a0In Christianity, for instance, feminist theology has been influential since the 70s and\u00a0often shapes\u00a0historical narratives today.
