On February 24th, 2026, The Green faith-based network invites to a seminar on “The role of faith actors in environmental governance and policy processes”.

Across the global South, climate change and biodiversity loss are accelerating pressures on livelihoods and natural resources such as water, land, forest and ecosystems, while institutional governance systems often struggle to respond effectively. Many countries face overlapping challenges: fragmented climate and biodiversity policies, limited coordination across government levels, weak implementation capacity, limited local resources and gaps between formal policy frameworks and local realities. Addressing these governance challenges is critical for ensuring adaptation efforts are inclusive, locally rooted, and responsive to the needs of those most affected. Strengthening dialogue between civil society, government actors, and community leadership is essential to bridge policy and practice and to ensure that environmental interventions are not only technically sound but also socially and politically legitimate.

Within this landscape, faith-based organizations play an increasingly visible and strategic role. In many African and other global South contexts, religious institutions are among the most trusted societal actors and often have deep, long-term presence in rural and marginalized regions where state structures are weak. Faith actors hold moral influence, convening power, and access to broad grassroots networks. These characteristics allow them to bridge policy and community priorities, raise public awareness, advocate for justice-oriented environmental policies, and foster accountability and dialogue between citizens and decision-makers.

The seminar will present different examples of how faith-based actors engage in environmental governance and policy processes at local, national and international levels.
