Chin State is one of the poorest and least developed states in Myanmar. The project area is mountainous, remote and poorly connected to the rest of the country. The inhabitants of this area, the Mara community – a Christian minority in the country- experience chronic food insecurity, mainly due to climate change, slash & burn rotational farming, lack of skills, equipment and knowledge (on sustainable farming/ use of Non Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) /nutritious food preparation), and lack of market opportunities. To address this situation the objective of the project is to improve food security, nutrition and livelihoods through use of NTFPs opportunities in Southern Chin State as means to combat poverty. This project will develop local capacity of two highly committed local NGOs: HHM and TSD to instigate a shift to a sustainable agricultural use of NTFPs, cooperating with and training Family Farmer Groups and women’s Self -Help Groups to apply new NTFP approaches. CSOs cooperation will be reinforced at local level so that they can effectively advocate on sustainable forest use. Finally, local authorities will be technically supported to be aware and generate policy on sustainable use of NTFPs so that they are better prepared to respond to food security issues of the community.
