More than 100 actors, experts, and practitioners from around the world participated when Digni and CKU presented the FoRB Community Generated Indicator Tool – a new resource designed to make it easier to measure, understand, and strengthen freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) in local contexts.

Ambassador, Special Representative for Freedom of Religion or Belief, Nathalia Feinberg, attended the launch and highlighted that the tool supports the Danish focus on locally led development.

“We are very proud to have supported the development of the FoRB Community Generated Indicator Tool,” she said, emphasizing that “the tool will be highly relevant to share within international networks and can strengthen the efforts to promoting FoRB.”

Nathalia Feinberg also took the opportunity to acknowledge the Danish organizations working to promote FoRB:

“We are very pleased to support work on freedom of religion or belief through the FoRB-window,” she said.

FoRB Community Generated Indicator Tool was presented at an online webinar on 22 February.

Former UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Ahmed Shaheed, likewise emphasized the tool’s significance:

“I really want to applaud the team. This is truly monumental,” he said, pointing to the tool’s focus on intersectionality, transparency, sensitive contexts, and power dynamics – elements that are critical at a time when human rights are more challenged than ever.

Liv Kvanvig, Policy Director for Human Rights and Civil Society at Norad, also highlighted the tool’s importance from a global development perspective. She stressed that “the tool can offer Norad and its partners a practical way to localize FoRB monitoring and strengthen knowledge-based and adaptive programming. The tool can help clarify what change looks like for various rights holders in specific contexts, taking power dynamics, intersectionality and sensitivity into account.”

She also pointed out that the tool can help clarify what change looks like for different rights holders in specific contexts – with attention to power dynamics, intersectionality, and contextual sensitivities.

The launch also included questions from practitioners and experts on everything from how to use the tool in practice to the process behind its development.
